Fashion Details Lecture Week 10 Recap

Collection Inspiration; Matryoshka Dolls

Characteristics

Upon further research of the Matryoshka Dolls, the matryoshka dolls consists of 7 dolls that fit inside each other in decreasing sizes. The biggest one being an 'Old Woman' and the tiniest one being the 'baby'. The head of the stacking doll is usually covered by a scarf to protect hair from the cold weather, like Russia's harsh long winters.

The doll is often painted with floral and mandala decorative motifs on a Russian peasant jumper dress called a Sarafan is a long, trapezoidal traditional Russian jumper dress (pinafore) worn as Russian folk costume by women and girls.

Theme Inspiration

Mezen Style

The mezen style is one of the oldest styles which originated along the mezen river.
It is very ornate with graphic forms of nature in palettes of red and black. It is full of symbolism, include woodland animals, like horses, deers, squirrels and birds. It also included scenes of Russian mythology. The red rooster painted on the second doll from the right symbolises good harvest and prosperity. It also embodies love, marriage and prosperity.

North Dvina

This particular style originated from the south of Mezen in the North Dvina river. This style is very similar to the Mezen design with its black outlines, flat colours and prominent use of red and black with green and yellow with motifs of plants and animals. The black outlines may vary in thickness which represents the lyrical flow of the design.

WGSN: Future Trends

We hopped onto the WGSN website and found some future trends that coincides with our collection. Heavily adorned patterns of mandala and floral motifs was one of the future trends which can be applied onto the embroidery for our collection. Wool and fur is also one of the trends which is suitable for our collection because of the winter look that we will be designing.

Collection Content

One of the fabrics that we'll be using is linen because it is the best fabric for embroidery work.

Collection Curation

Summer florals have always suggested a sunny mood. However, in our Autumn/Winter wear collection, bright and beguiling summer florals neutralizes the cold, dark winter look of the main fabric color and rich brown faux fur trimmings. The collection offers an enchanting fashionscape of bold modernized Russian folk flowers in primary and secondary colors with striking green leaves and animal motifs which serves inspiring symbolism of love and prosperity. From fluffy Russian hats to winter coats and jackets trimmed with soft and luscious foxlike fur on the hem, cuffs and collars are balanced by heavily-textured tight-packed flower motifs of a whimsical, elemental hue .  This collection is heavily-influenced by the women of Russia, protecting themselves with their scarves and Sarafan dresses from the long and harsh winters. Their clothing was of intricate details in terms of fabric and design. The collection is edgy and suitable for streetwear by taking only the key elements of fur and floral embroidery onto our garments and even on the boots and head gears of our winter Autumn/Winter wear. Autumn and winter are also the seasons of layers, we have included flannel, linen and cotton thermal wear underneath those jackets and coats. In addition to the embroideries, actual Matryoshka dolls embroidery will also be sewn in to add a bit of quirkiness to the exoticness of our collection.
